Mellon's Transformational Sentence-Combining: A Method for Enhancing the Development of Syntactic Fluency in English Composition. Mellon's study was an attempt to show that instruction in sentence-combining, together with instruction in transformational grammar, is more effective than traditional instruction in grammar.

"Teaching the Universe of Discourse" appears in virtually every bibliography dealing with language and learning and is widely read and cited throughout the English-teaching world. It's a book that every experienced and beginning teacher should read (and read again). Grammar teaching could be surreptitious, as it were, with a clear underlying theory of grammar but minimal use of grammatical terminology. This is in fact how a lot of grammar teaching has been done; and in particular there is a well-recognised activity called ‘sentence combining’ which seems to be widely used in the USA.

An alternative to traditional forms of grammar instruction, sentence combining gives students practice in manipulating a variety of basic sentence structures. Abstract. Both research in the field of writing and writing pedagogy have been built to a large extent on the premise that, as a fundamental discourse process, writing has critical connections to speaking.

What those connections are has been debated by both researchers and teachers. This article reviews writing research that implicates Cited by: The book primarily teaches through sentence combining exercises.

The student has to rewrite two sentences into one more grammatically complex sentence. It is designed to be self-teaching; however, most of the answers to the exercises are listed directly underneath them.4/4(1). Though it is certainly true, as many writers have pointed out, that sentence- combining exercises existed before the advent of transformational grammar, it should be evident that the transformational concept of embedding gave sentence combining a theoretical foundation upon which to build Universal Grammar: The system of categories, operations.Sentence-Combining and the Teaching of Writing.
